Dear Community Partner,
March is finally here! This means we can celebrate being only 20 days away from Spring and warmer weather…BUT it’s also time to celebrate National Nutrition Month! Nutrition education is vital in helping a community take initiative when it comes to their health and that is one of the many goals of Go! 5-2-1-0; to equip our communities with resources to help the individuals that make up those communities live healthier lives.
In 2013, The United States Department of Agriculture established nutrition standards for snacks sold in public schools to encourage healthy eating; many corporations have responded by reformulating their recipes to meet those nutritional standards. These reformulated snacks are called “smart snacks”.
The University of Connecticut Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity performed a study where middle school and high school students participated in an online experiment. One of the key findings of this experiment is that most smart snacks are not available outside of schools and while these snacks meet USDA guidelines, students are still exposed to marketing of unhealthy brands within school walls. The solution is very simple: education, education, education!
Help us help you with Nutrition Education by reaching out and booking us for a no cost presentation to your staff and the children and families that you serve.
Also, a friendly reminder that The Regional YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day is set for April 28th, 2018 and your organization is invited to attend!
Best Regards,
Kit Sathong
