Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut Expands Efforts to Combat Social Isolation
[BROOKFIELD, CT, October 30, 2024]— The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut is addressing the critical issue of social isolation among older adults through initiatives such as “First Fridays” and “Phone a Friend.” These programs help foster connections, reduce loneliness, enhance wellbeing, and create a sense of connectedness in the Brookfield and Greater Danbury communities.
“Social isolation can significantly affect mental and physical health,” said Lisa O’Connor, Wellness Director. “Our programs are designed to help older adults connect with others, reducing loneliness and improving their quality of life.”
First Fridays offer in-person gatherings where participants can engage in social activities, enjoy refreshments, and join wellness programs, all while forming meaningful friendships. The Phone a Friend initiative ensures regular contact for seniors who may be unable to attend in-person events, providing ongoing companionship through scheduled phone calls. With the Regional YMCA’s commitment to supporting older adults in Brookfield, Danbury, and surrounding areas, these initiatives play a vital role in enhancing both mental and physical wellbeing. Participants often experience increased energy, reduced stress, and a greater sense of belonging within their community. The Regional YMCA is incredibly grateful to The Peter and Carmen Lucia Buck Foundation (PCLB) for their generous support of these efforts.
“Thanks to PCLB’s funding, we are able to continue expanding these programs and reach more individuals in need,” O’Connor added. “Their contribution allows us to make a lasting difference in the lives of older adults across the region.”
The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut is located at 2 Huckleberry Hill Road in Brookfield, CT 06804.
